Newport News Park and Campground is one of the largest municiple parks east of the Mississippi. It encompasses over 8,000 acres, with the Newport News Reservior as it's centerpiece. While they don't have a beach and swimming is not allowed, there is still plenty to do here. Several different hiking trails provide for many miles of intersting hikes. There is also a five mile Mountain Bike trail as well. A large play ground for the kid's is located near the center of the park, and there are bike, boat, paddle boat, and canoe rentals available. The campground also host's an Archery Range, and the park has a Radio Controled Airplane flying area. There are several sites, most of them have water and electric hook up's. All sites are heavily wooded, well shaded, and they are spaced out really well. The more popular sites are the ones on the waterfont, so reserve early! There are five loops, all of them are equipped with large rest room facilities. All have flush toilets and hot showers. There are no sewer hook-up's, but there is a dump station available. This park is located within easy reach of Virginia's "Historic Triangle" (Williamsburg, Jamestown, & Yorktown), and only half hour from Norfolk and 45 mins from Virginia Beach. Located right off of I-64 at exit 250B, it's well marked and easy to find. The biggest draw back to this campground, is it's proximity to the interstate. From all the loops, you can still hear the traffic from I-64, faint but audible. But it's the nicest park in the vicinity, and the trade-off for lesser parks makes it worthwhile.
